WASHINGTON, DC – With the election just over four weeks away, The Ripon Society held a luncheon discussion yesterday afternoon with two leading strategists from the Republican Party’s House and Senate campaign arms.

The strategists were Kevin McLaughlin, who serves as Deputy Executive Director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and John Rogers, who serves as Political Director of the National Republican Congressional Committee.  In an hour-long presentation, the pair previewed some of the key House and Senate races around the country, and shared their thoughts on the political landscape in this volatile election year.

“We appreciate Kevin and John for taking the time to be with us,” stated Jim Conzelman, the President and CEO of The Ripon Society.  “It’s a busy time of year for them to say the least.  It is also a critical time of year, as Republicans look to hold and build on their majorities in the House and Senate.  Given all the coverage surrounding the presidential campaign, these down-ballot races have not been getting much attention.  And yet when you look at the issues before us and some of the challenges that will be facing America in the coming years, there can be no doubt that control of Congress is as important as control of the White House — which is why the work of these two gentlemen is so important.”

According to Conzelman, yesterday’s luncheon discussion with McLaughlin and Rogers  was attended by a crowd of over 90 people.  He noted that the luncheon follows up on a similar discussion The Ripon Society held on June 9th with NRSC Chairman Roger Wicker.  It also comes a week before an October 13th luncheon The Ripon Society is scheduled to hold with Republican strategist and counsel Ben Ginsberg.  Conzelman added that yesterday’s luncheon was the 55th event The Ripon Society has held in 2016, and that additional events are scheduled for when Congress returns to Washington after the election.  These events include a breakfast discussion with U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks (IN-5) on December 1st, and a lunch discussion on December 15th with Carroll Doherty, the Director of Political Research at Pew Research Center.

The Ripon Society is a public policy organization that was founded in 1962 and takes its name from the town where the Republican Party was born in 1854 — Ripon, Wisconsin.  One of the main goals of The Ripon Society is to promote the ideas and principles that have made America great and contributed to the GOP’s success.  These ideas include keeping our nation secure, keeping taxes low and having a federal government that is smaller, smarter and more accountable to the people.
