On Wednesday,
February 7, over
90 members of
The Ripon
Society gathered
at The Capitol
Hill Club for
our first policy
dinner of the
year. The guest
of honor was
House Ways and
Means Committee
Chairman Bill
Thomas of
California’s 22nd
District.
The evening
began with a
surprise
appearance by
newly-elected
House Majority
Leader John
Boehner of the 8th
District of
Ohio. The
Majority Leader
gave a few
remarks on the
recent
leadership race
and the upcoming
year in
Congress.
Chairman Thomas
then gave his
thoughts on the
agenda that lies
ahead,
commenting on
the President’s
budget proposal
and the
opportunities
and challenges
of the House and
Senate working
together this
year. He also
answered
questions on
Social Security
reform, proposed
tax cuts and tax
credits, and
immigration,
among other
issues.
